Musk Consortium Set to Acquire OpenAI Nonprofit for $97.4 Billion

On February 11, a consortium led by Musk proposed acquiring OpenAI for $97.4 billion, deepening the rift with CEO Sam Altman. Musk's lawyer, Mark Tober, confirmed the offer was made to the OpenAI board. Musk intends to restore OpenAI to an open-source, safety-focused model. A system reform policy is expected in June, with legal revisions set for the 2026 Diet session. The reforms may lower the current tax rate from 55% to 20%.
