The landscape of retail investment has been evolving globally, with a noteworthy upswing in the number of individuals turning towards crypto assets. This trend is particularly pronounced in France, as reported by the country's financial watchdog, the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF). An AMF study, supported by the European Union's Technical Support Instrument, reveals that as of 2023, approximately 9% of the adult population in France has invested in crypto assets, indicating a significant shift in investment habits.

This comprehensive survey, which included insights from over a thousand new retail investors in France, found that a quarter of the adult population is now engaging in a range of financial investments, with a notable lean towards cryptocurrencies. This shift is not just a mere diversification of investment portfolios but also signals a change in the investment landscape, particularly among younger investors, who are increasingly attracted to digital finance opportunities.

The demographic profile of these new investors is younger and more varied than traditional investors. With an average age of 36 years, a substantial number of these investors are under 35. Their investment choices are influenced not only by the potential for financial growth but also by current social and digital trends. The burgeoning interest in crypto assets among this demographic underscores a correlation between youth, digital literacy, and a propensity to invest in nascent technological ventures.

Interestingly, the AMF survey points out a divergence in investment patterns between new and traditional investors. While 54% of new investors have crypto assets in their portfolios, this percentage escalates to 63% among those aged between 25 and 34. This is in stark contrast to just 25% of more established, traditional investors. The reasons behind investments vary among French citizens, but there are commonalities like the pursuit of higher returns and the diversification of savings. Social media and peer influence are emerging as significant factors, with many new investors being swayed into the market by online trends or recommendations from friends and family.

However, despite this keen interest in crypto assets, the survey also highlights a trend of cautious investment among these new entrants. Most prefer moderate-risk investments, with the average amount invested in crypto assets being around €4,070.

The AMF study raises an important concern regarding the financial literacy of these new investors. Many appear to have a limited understanding of fundamental investment concepts, such as risk diversification and the implications of inflation, despite believing they have a good grasp of financial matters. This gap underscores the need for enhanced financial education, particularly as newer forms of investment, like crypto assets, become more prevalent in the mainstream market.
