Apple is actively seeking a major tech partner to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, particularly to upgrade the iPhone’s features to keep pace with competitors. According to reports, Apple has been in deep discussions with OpenAI about integrating generative AI technologies into iOS, although it has also considered Google as another potential cloud partner. Over the years, Apple's approach to AI has evolved significantly. Initially, the company’s insular strategy on AI development suggested it might be preparing some groundbreaking innovations. However, as of 2024, this strategy appears to have stalled somewhat, with the iPhone beginning to lag behind competitors that prioritize AI.
This pivot towards external collaborations became apparent around May 2022, when Ian Goodfellow, known as the "GANfather" for his pioneering work in AI, resigned from his role as director of machine learning at Apple due to disagreements over the company's office return policy.
Despite this setback, Apple has continued to engage with the AI community. The company has released eight open-source large language models, providing the public with access to the code and training logs. Although this move demonstrates Apple’s ongoing commitment to AI and machine learning, these models are not seen as competitive with proprietary technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini.
Given these developments, it seems that Apple may be aiming to solidify its generative AI partnerships in time for its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. WWDC has traditionally been the platform for Apple to unveil its most significant products. However, 2024 has so far been a relatively quiet year for the company. Meanwhile, Apple’s key rival, Microsoft, has greatly benefited from its partnership with OpenAI, a leader in the AI sector. This collaboration has helped Microsoft to achieve a commanding position as the world’s most valuable company by market capitalization, boasting a total value of $3.019 trillion, compared to Apple’s $2.614 trillion.
As Apple prepares for the upcoming WWDC and seeks to reclaim its innovation edge, the decisions it makes now regarding AI partnerships and technology integration could be crucial in determining its competitive stance in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
