Genesis Digital Assets (GDA), a major bitcoin mining company, has established three new data centers in the western region of South Carolina, marking its continued expansion in the United States. These new facilities, which account for over 2% of Bitcoin's total hashrate, have created around 150 local jobs and utilized 95% of construction work from South Carolina workers.

GDA's first data center, operational since February near Anderson, boasts an 18-megawatt (MW) capacity. Two more centers launched in March, located between Union and Lockhart, with a combined capacity of 15 MW. The selection of these locations was driven by the availability of abundant clean energy, with the Pacolet center positioned near hydroelectric plants and Anderson utilizing environmentally friendly transformers. Moreover, these data centers are designed to enhance the local grid by returning excess power.

Over the last year, GDA has grown its mining capacity to approximately 708 MW of electricity, operating in multiple locations in Texas and North Carolina. The company has built more than 20 large-scale mining farms across North America, Europe, and Central Asia, emphasizing its commitment to clean energy resources to lead the industry in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.

The surge in bitcoin mining activities is not exclusive to GDA. Various firms have recently announced expansions, with some purchasing thousands of machines and constructing new facilities. In Kyrgyzstan, a $20 million crypto mining farm is set to be built at a hydropower plant, further showcasing the growing interest in sustainable energy solutions for mining operations. A study published in late June also highlighted that the bitcoin mining industry is among the largest consumers of sustainable energy, indicating a growing trend towards ESG-friendly practices within the sector.

GDA's new data centers in South Carolina represent a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to support the local economy while promoting clean energy usage in the mining process. With the increasing attention on environmental impact, the industry is witnessing a shift towards sustainable practices, and GDA aims to lead the way as an ESG-conscious mining operator.
