A recent global consumer survey conducted by Salesforce has highlighted a growing skepticism among customers towards companies that utilize artificial intelligence (AI), with concerns focusing on potential unethical uses of the technology. The survey, which gathered responses from over 14,000 consumers and firms across 25 countries, revealed that nearly three-quarters of customers are worried about the unethical application of AI. Of the respondents, more than 40% expressed a lack of trust in companies to ethically employ AI, and nearly 70% emphasized the increasing significance of companies being seen as trustworthy as AI technology advances. The survey also indicated a declining openness towards using AI compared to the previous year. In 2022, over 80% of business buyers and 65% of consumers were receptive to utilizing AI to enhance experiences. These figures have since decreased to 73% and 51%, respectively.

In a separate survey conducted in Australia by market research firm Roy Morgan, involving nearly 1,500 participants, it was found that almost 60% of respondents believed that AI "creates more problems than it solves." Notably, one in five participants expressed the concern that AI could pose a risk of human extinction by 2043, echoing worries raised by AI experts who have advocated for global prioritization of mitigating human extinction risks associated with AI.

However, contrasting the growing apprehension towards AI in the two surveys mentioned above, another study from Pew Research in the United States showed that a majority of respondents were not even aware of, let alone utilized, one of the most widely-known AI chatbots. The Pew Research report, which surveyed over 5,000 Americans, revealed that only 18% had used OpenAI's ChatGPT. About a quarter of the respondents had heard of the chatbot, primarily those under the age of 30, with around 40% of this demographic having used the bot at least once.

Additionally, Pew's report indicated that men, individuals under 30, and those with postgraduate education were more likely to have engaged with ChatGPT. As discussions on AI regulation unfold on a global scale, Pew Research found that among those who were aware of ChatGPT, nearly 70% were concerned that the government wasn't taking sufficient steps to regulate AI chatbot usage. This sentiment transcended political affiliations in the United States.
