The United Kingdom has unveiled a significant investment of £300 million ($363.57 million) in two artificial intelligence (AI) supercomputers, collectively referred to as the "AI Research Resource." This announcement followed the conclusion of the global AI Safety Summit's first day, which centered on enhancing AI safety standards. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized that this investment is crucial as frontier AI models continue to advance in power. It aims to equip Britain's scientific talent with the necessary tools to ensure the safety of the most advanced AI models.

The two supercomputers will provide U.K. researchers with more than 30 times the capacity of the country's current largest public AI computing resources. These cutting-edge machines are expected to be operational by the summer of 2024. The primary supercomputer, Isambard-AI, will be constructed by Hewlett-Packard Enterprise and feature 5,000 advanced Nvidia AI chips. The second supercomputer, named "Dawn," will be developed in collaboration with Dell and powered by 1,000 AI chips from Intel. Earlier reports indicated that the U.K. had allocated $130 million for AI chips in August.

Isambard-AI, according to the U.K.'s announcement, will be capable of performing over 200 petaflops, equivalent to 200 quadrillion calculations per second. This substantial computing power will be instrumental in advancing AI research and applications.

United States Vice President Kamala Harris also participated in the summit's first day, highlighting the importance of close collaboration between the U.S. and the U.K. regarding the opportunities and risks posed by frontier AI. Harris's speech emphasized the urgent need for collective action to address potential threats, including cyberattacks on an unprecedented scale and the development of AI-driven bioweapons.

These comments from the U.S. vice president followed the recent release of an executive order by the Biden administration outlining AI safety standards and measures to be implemented in the United States. This executive order underscores the significance of AI safety and security in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
