According to a statement from network creator OP Labs, the Bedrock update for the Optimism network has been successfully implemented on June 7. This update brings several improvements, including reduced deposit times, decreased layer-1 fees, and enhanced security measures. The upgrade is one of several changes, according to the developer, that together will build a Superchain of scalable Web3 networks using OP Stack software from Optimism.

According to OP Labs CEO Karl Floersch in an interview with Cointelegraph, Bedrock applies many gas reductions the team found, resulting in a 40% reduction in data availability costs on the Ethereum network. Users can enjoy the benefits of these savings by paying lower transaction fees when using Optimism.

The upgrade also makes it possible for the network to identify chain changes (reorgs) on Ethereum, representing these reorgs in the user's Optimism balance. Thanks to this improvement, deposit times can be reduced to just one minute. In the past, transfers from Ethereum to Optimism took an average of 10 minutes since L1 finality was required. Additionally, Bedrock employs a two-step withdrawal procedure to guard against bridge exploitation.

In addition to these immediate adjustments, the new update paves the way for future advancements in the OP Stack, aligning with the long-term goal of building a multi-network Superchain, as stated by Floersch. The update introduces modular proof systems that allow programmers to design and construct customized blockchain networks. Additionally, op-geth, the validator component of the software, differs from Ethereum's version by less than 1,000 lines of code, potentially simplifying the process for validators to transition to it.

The Base network of Coinbase announced that it will join the Superchain on February 23. It released a roadmap outlining its mainnet launch strategy on May 24.
