A new task group has been established by the US Department of Defense to investigate the potential applications of generative AI in national defense. On August 10, the Pentagon announced the formation of Task Force Lima to look into ways to incorporate AI into the American defense industry so that it might design, deploy, and operate artificial intelligence (AI) generative technologies.

The Department of Defense stated in a statement that the goal of using AI is to improve its business operations, health, preparedness, policy, and warfighting capabilities. A component of Lima's objective, according to Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks, will be to investigate how the department might counteract or respond to AI that is being used maliciously or in a hostile manner. The new task force will be run by the newly established Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, which became live in June 2022. Captain Manuel Xavier Lugo of the U.S. Navy will serve as Lima's mission commander. The development of Lima coincides with escalating concerns over AI technology between the United States and China.

Pentagon Is Conducting Tests To Determine Whether AI Can Prepare For All-Out Conflict

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on August 9 designating China, Hong Kong, and Macau as nations of concern and limiting and regulating IT investments there. These technological investments included semiconductors, which are frequently essential for creating AI models and are believed crucial for China's military, intelligence, and cyber capabilities. The directive expands the limitations on sales of AI chips to China that Biden put in place in October 2022, and American officials are considering tighter curbs on such sales. The tests are only scheduled to last through July 26, although the U.S. military has been researching AI's potential in combat for some time. The U.S. and Australia participated in the first joint trial utilizing AI-enabled military drones to monitor targets in May at the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory, a government organization in the United Kingdom.
